But what is there to do in a city during Easter besides visiting its main attractions, museums and galleries? How to experience Easter in all of its glory? Let us give you a few hints to turn your Easter holidays in Thessaloniki into a set of memories to treasure for life.
Any day of the passion week visit the church of Agios Nikolaos Orphanos, one of Thessaloniki’s most precious hidden treasures at the Northern section of the city’s walls. Marvel the frescos of a bygone era and unwind in its verdant garden.
On Good Friday join the procession of the Epitaph at 5 p.m. at the church of Agios Minas in Thessaloniki.
If you wish to travel back in time, celebrate the resurrection of Christ at Vlatadon Monastery in the picturesque neighborhood of Ano Poli while taking in the majestic vistas to the city.
On Saturday night is the Anastasi (resurrection of Jesus) so make your way to the church of Agia Sofia in the heart of Thessaloniki after 10pm or a few minutes before midnight. Everybody sings and wishes each other “Kali Anastasi” and light their candles. It’s a magnificent moment. Usually there are also plenty of fireworks after midnight, too!
On Sunday there is rhe traditional easter meal with lamp. Visit the city centre and select any traditional taverna to taste the local recipe. Modiano market, Athonos etc. It is also a good opportunity to take a short drive to Chalkidiki in Moudania, Kallikrateia, Potidaia or Athitos and enjoy your meal with a sea view. Most of the locals visit their country houses during the easter holidays.
On Monday is a day off for the locals, shops are closed but coffee shops & restaurants are usually open. So enjoy a walk at the city seaside promenade, take a short cruise with one of the ships or rent a bike.
